The great thing about college scholarships is that students can not only apply for free money for college, there are a variety to submit to. That means even more students have the opportunity to possibly receive the funding they need to achieve their higher education goals.

There are scholarships awarded based on financial need, merit/academics, special skills, religious affiliation and even those specifically for individuals of different ethnic/racial backgrounds. Among these category-specific scholarships, there are also those available based the state a student resides in.

Below are scholarships students living in the state of California could possibly be eligible for:

Dr. Mary Finegold Scholarship

Amount: $1,000

Scholarships for College in CaliforniaWho is Eligible: Female, senior level students scheduled to graduate from a high school located in the Palo Alto, California area.

Number of Awards Given: N/A

Relevant Majors of Study: Science

Additional Info: Female applicants must plan on earning a 4-year degree in the field of Science. Strong/preferred candidates are those that have demonstrable experience dealing with a financial hardship and/or who have not allowed negative gender stereotypes to limit their goals and abilities.

Dean Children Memorial Scholarship

Amount: $50,000

Who is Eligible: All undergraduate students

Number of Awards Given: 1

Relevant Majors of Study: Education

Additional Info: This particular scholarship is only available to students that reside in Kern, Santa Barbara, Orange, San Luis Obispo, Riverside, San Diego, Los Angeles, Orange and San Bernardino.

San Francisco Foundation Jackson/Phelan Award

Amount: $2,000

Who is Eligible: All students

Number of Awards Given: 2

Relevant Majors of Study: Literature, Drama, Humanities, Theater, English, Secondary Education

Additional Info: N/A

CAR (California Association of Realtors) Scholarship Foundation

Amount: $1,000 for students attending a 2-year school and $2,000 for students enrolled at a 4-year college/university.

Who is Eligible: All students that are residents of California or who have been a legal resident of California for at least one (1) year prior to submission.

Number of Awards Given: Varies

Relevant Majors of Study: Real Estate

Additional Info: Applicants must have a valid California driver’s license or California ID card and maintain a minimum 2.6 GPA. Students with proven financial need receive preference. Additionally, applicants must be currently taking at least 6 units in college, as well as completed a minimum of 12 units prior to submission. The CAR Scholarship Foundation award is renewable.

James A. Scatena Memorial Scholarship

Amount: $1,000

Who is Eligible: All undergraduates

Number of Awards Given: 1

Relevant Majors of Study: Open to all majors

Additional Information: Applicants must be of Italian heritage.

California Auxiliary Gift Scholarship

Amount: $800

Who is Eligible: All students who have at least one parent that is a veteran.

Number of Awards Given: 5

Relevant Majors of Study: Open to all majors

Additional Information: N/A

Carol Marks Scholarship

Amount: $300

Who is Eligible: Students that are affiliated with the American Legion or veterans

Number of Awards Given: 1

Relevant Majors of Study: Technical and Vocational

Additional Information: N/A

California Farm Bureau Scholarship

Amount: $1,250

Who is Eligible: All students that are residents of California

Number of Awards Given: Varies

Relevant Majors of Study: Home Economics and Agriculture
